The last two — Gemini 2.5 Pro and Gemini 3 Flash — were already marked retired. The September 1 date is the hard cutoff for the remaining three.
The Claude Sonnet 4.6 exception is worth paying attention to. GitHub is keeping it around for individual subscribers on annual plans specifically so they "retain a Sonnet offering." That wording suggests GitHub sees Sonnet as a tier marker — something people expect in their subscription — and doesn't want to take it away from paying annual users mid-contract.
Why This Matters
This isn't just a routine model refresh. Three things make this significant:
1. The shift toward Flash models. Look at the replacements: Claude Sonnet 5, Gemini 3.6 Flash, MAI-Code-1-Flash. The pattern is clear — GitHub is optimizing Copilot's model lineup for speed and cost. Flash variants are cheaper to serve and faster to respond. For inline autocomplete, that trade-off makes sense. For complex refactoring or architectural reasoning, I'm less convinced.
2. Sonnet as a retention anchor. The annual-plan exception for Sonnet 4.6 is a quiet admission that losing Sonnet access would cause churn. GitHub knows some developers pay for Copilot specifically because of Sonnet. They're not ready to bet those subscriptions on the replacements yet.
3. Competitive pressure from Cursor and Claude Code. GitHub Copilot's market share has slipped from 67% to somewhere around 51% (or 42%, depending on which survey you trust), while Cursor hit $2 billion ARR and Claude Code grew 6x. Model quality is a differentiator in this market. When Copilot drops a model that people like, those users have alternatives — and they know it.
The strategic picture: GitHub is caught between two forces. On one side, they need to keep model quality high enough that developers don't leave for Cursor or Claude Code. On the other, Microsoft needs Copilot's inference costs under control at scale — 4.7 million paid subscribers isn't cheap to serve. The Flash-heavy replacement list reads like a cost optimization move dressed as a model upgrade.
What Developers Should Do Now
Here's my checklist for Copilot users, ordered by urgency:
If you use Claude Sonnet 4.6 in Copilot daily:
- Check your plan type. If you're on an annual individual plan, you're safe — Sonnet 4.6 stays.
- If you're on a monthly individual plan or any team/enterprise plan, you lose Sonnet 4.6 on September 1.
- Start testing Claude Sonnet 5 in Copilot now. Don't wait until the switch is forced on you.
- If Sonnet 5 doesn't meet your needs, evaluate Claude Code or Cursor as fallbacks. Both offer Sonnet access outside Copilot's model restrictions.
If you use MAI-Code-1-Flash or Raptor Mini:
- These are being replaced by faster Flash variants from the same model families. The transition should be smooth for most use cases.
- Test the replacements on your typical workflows this week. Edge cases in specialized languages or frameworks are where Flash models tend to regress.
For team leads and engineering managers:
- Audit which models your team actually uses in Copilot. Most developers never change the default — find out if anyone on your team relies on a model that's being retired.
- If Sonnet access matters to your team and you're on a monthly or enterprise plan, this is the moment to have the "do we stay with Copilot?" conversation.
- Update team documentation to reflect the new model options after September 1.

I've been tracking Copilot's model strategy for a while, and this feels like a turning point. The deprecation list isn't just about retiring old models — it's about GitHub signaling which direction Copilot is heading.
The Flash-first replacement strategy makes business sense. At Copilot's scale, every millisecond of inference latency and every cent of compute cost matters. But there's a tension here: the developers who care most about model quality are also the ones most likely to switch tools. If Sonnet 5 in Copilot is noticeably worse than Sonnet in Claude Code or Cursor, the annual-plan exception won't hold those users forever.
One thing I'm watching: whether this accelerates the "multi-tool" trend among developers. Anecdotally, I'm seeing more engineers who use Copilot for autocomplete and Claude Code for complex tasks. Model deprecations like this push that behavior further. If you can't get the model you want in Copilot, you find it somewhere else — and once you're using two tools, the switching cost of dropping either one drops significantly.
